SHERPA wins SPARC Europe Award

SHERPA is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the SPARC Europe Award for Outstanding Achievements in Scholarly Communication.

This Award was given in recognition of "their outstanding contribution to Open Access in general and specifically as advocates for the adoption of institutional repositories and for their development of a suite of online tools in support of Open Access, including OpenDOAR, JULIET and RoMEO".

The Award was made on 18th April 2007 at the OAI5 Conference in Geneva, by Drs J.S.M. (Bas) Savanije as the Chair of the SPARC Europe Board of Directors, to Bill Hubbard, SHERPA Manager, who accepted it on behalf of the partnership and core SHERPA team.

Bill Hubbard said:
"I am delighted to be able to accept this award on behalf of the SHERPA partnership and in particular on behalf of the SHERPA core team at the University of Nottingham. We would like to thank SPARC Europe for the honour of being chosen for this award for our advocacy activities and online services in the area of Open Access repositories. We are pleased that the community has found these to be valuable and honoured by this recognition.

We are proud of the services that we offer - RoMEO, JULIET and OpenDOAR - and hope that these will make a contribution to the success of Open Access. Our thanks to all those who have contributed or helped to build these and we look forward to continuing community contributions.

We would also like to thank our funders: JISC; CURL; SPARC Europe; the Open Society Institute; European Commission, and the Wellcome Trust for their generous support for our work and for their belief in our goals."

Stephen Pinfield, SHERPA Director, says:
"SHERPA has been active in the international discussions on scholarly communications for a number of years and we are very pleased that our contribution to Open Access has been recognised in this way."

The SPARC Europe award has been awarded once before, to the Wellcome Trust, for their work in the area of open access. We are very pleased to be in such company.
